It is said that the greatness of a people is judged by the cultural heritage of its society. It is from this cultural heritage that national identity and love for country arises. Pride for one's race comes from the Martial history of its people, the legendary exploits of its heroes and the glory of its past...from its Warrior Ethic.
Every society has its own version of the warrior ethic. Japan has its Samurai warriors, Korea has the Hwarang, India revels in the glory of its Kalaripayyat warriors. To the Filipino, the warrior class is represented by the Kali Warriors of pre-hispanic Philippines. Philippine history tells us of the exploits of these fearless fighters. Skilled in the use of various weaponry and unarmed combat, these warriors were feared not only for their skill, but also for their courage and ferocity as well.
Unknown to many, the Filipino Combat Art of Kali contributed greatly in the formation of this country's destiny. It was Kali which killed Magellan that fateful day on the shores of Mactan. Kali helped the early Katipuneros in their struggle to rid themselves of the Spanish yoke. Japanese soldiers found their match during World War II, in our Guerilla fighters. It is the story behind the formation of the first all-filipino infantry division, the First Infantry Tabak Division during the American Commonwealth, and the legendary Guerilla unit of World War II, the Bolo Battalion. These Warriors are the unsung heroes of our past, men who were willing to give their lives for their country and people.
Indeed, the Filipino art of Kali is a tribute to the ingenuity, and bravery of our forefathers. It reminds us of the greatness of our past, the glory of the Sri-vijayan and Majapahit Empires which once spanned all of South East Asia; a past from which the Filipino can draw strength and pride from.
We, the members of Mandirigmang Kaliradman believe in this past. We believe in the capability of the Filipino warrior, and it is our aim to revive this ethic, the FilipinoWarrior Ethic.
